Craterellus cornucopioides, also known as the black trumpet, or the trumpet of the dead has an extremely wide feeding niche. By evolving a more generalist saprophytic lifestyle, this species is enzymatically well-rounded, allowing it to break down a wide variety of organic compounds. As a result, this successful species can be found all over the world.
